- Despite an unusually mind winter in the UK, tyre companies have reported a large increase in sales of cold weather tyres for the last 3 months of 2011. The biggest companies say that year on year sales rose about 50%. The figure rises to 300% when compared to a few years ago. This is somewhat surprising as most motorists have little disposable income available, however, they are being applauded for recognizing that having appropriate tyres for driving in winter conditions is a necessity. - People might think that with improved technology making them equipped to provide more power, that car batteries would last longer now than ever before. However, cars these days are more powerful and there are various contraptions added to cars that were not around in the past. The result is that today’s car batteries only last around as long as they did 10 years ago, which is typically 5-6 years. Having battery operated parts of the car turned on when the engine is not running will shorten that time span, however, it can also be prolonged with proper usage and good maintenance. - Department of Transport statistics show that road accident incidents fell last year by around 4%, but that the figures still do not compare favorably to other European countries. It was noted that not all road accidents get reported and that even those involved who do report an accident often fail to claim for compensation when they may be due it because of the negligence of the other party. - The number of accident claims resulting from car accidents involving young drivers is increasing. It is thought that as many as 20% of young drivers have been involved in an accident, and that of all deaths among young adults that over half are on the roads. A typical car accident claim size for a male under the age of 20 is around £4,500, which compares to £1,500 for males aged between 30-50. This issue is clearly a big problem. Young people driving carelessly not only endanger themselves and others, they are also causing premiums to rise for all drivers. Related reading – Car Accident Claims
- No win no fee claims have become more common these days because legal aid is no longer available for personal injury claims. Without the availability of no win no fee agreements, many people would not be able to afford to hire a solicitor to help them with their claim, and without a solicitor they would have very little chance of winning their case. Whilst the no win no fee approach is not the right solution for everyone, it is often the best course of action. Not all of these agreements are the same though, so it is important to discuss exactly who will be liable for what costs and under what circumstances. Related reading – No Win No Fee
